The Environmental Protection Agency says that common chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities. They also can contribute to depression, frustration, increased feeling of stress and so on.

Current technologies for the production of most commercial and household cleaning detergents are based on toxic chemical compounds known to negatively impact our environment. Residual amounts of surfactants and other synthetic chemicals typically found in many household and commercial cleaning detergents continue to find their way into our waterways, despite our best efforts to remove most of them at water treatment plants. These surfactants adversely affect aquatic life and amplify other more toxic chemical residues that are also present in our environment. While some are biodegradable under aerobic conditions, many do not degrade well under anaerobic conditions (such as lake or river sediment and sewage sludge).
